<image:caption>It means that your reality is falling short of your expectations, or what you were hoping for. Living in that expectation gap can be dissatisfying and dangerous. You are not alone. There are people who have successfully bridged that gap and are living healthy and God-honoring lives… people who want to dig in with you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Well for one, the founder of tiller. Jim Barnard has walked through some difficult challenges and nearly fell victim to the the expectation gap. His wife got terribly sick 3 months into their marriage; forcing him to deal with a lot of disappointment and depression. The Lord has provided him a lot of direction and coaching, that he wants to share with you. Read more of his story. All tiller coaches are expectation gap experts and here to help you in your gap. See who’s coaching for tiller.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We take the time to learn about your story and what is important to you. By asking very directed questions, we dig into the reality of your life. All coaching at tiller begins with an understanding of scripture and a desire to show others how to live a life that honors God. The goal is to become made alive by finding gratitude for what He has provided and will provide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>meet carlos. - it all starts with what’s real.</image:title>
<image:caption>Reality has been crazy for ol’ “Crazy Carl” (Jim’s favorite nickname for me). I was not raised in a church home and my parents divorced when I was 12 years old. This is when I first experienced disappointment, dissatisfaction, and distress. Two years later, at the age of 14, I met Jesus and was filled with hope. From the ages of 14-21 I was on fire for God and served for 3 years as an overseas missionary during that time. Since that time, for the last 20 years, my life has seen a series of ups and downs. From a 2-year failed social experiment (my first marriage), to losing a teammate and friend in combat in Afghanistan, multiple deployments that resulted in Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Moral Injury (MI), a cancer scare, and a 13-month separation from my wife of over 15 years (we are back together!)—reality has certainly been crazy for me. I have always felt a call to ministry. I figured that I needed some schooling to help in this endeavor, so I earned a Master of Arts in Theological Studies and a Master of Religious Education from Liberty University, and a Master of Divinity (MDiv) and Doctor of Ministry (DMin) from Manna University (I really like learning). Since 2019 I have served in several SERVE positions in my local church: Small Group leader, Small Groups Director, Growth Track Director, CARE counselor, on the Short-Term Mission (STM) leadership team, Guest Services Director, and MannaKids curriculum team. Through all my schooling and serving at the local church, what I am most passionate about is pastoral coaching. Because of the ups and downs, expectation gaps, and suffering seasons throughout my life, I realized that this has all been for God’s glory. God is using my lived experiences to coach others who also have expectation gaps and suffering seasons. Like Jim, I will give my time and coaching away for free. Also, like Jim, my prayer is that I can raise enough funds to afford my time as a local missionary. There is a support/donation link in the header of this page if people want to donate, but as I will be giving my time and coaching away for free, there will be no payment expected. If you want to try a free coaching sesh, let’s get started! -carlos</image:caption>

      <image:title>meet jim. - it all starts with what’s real.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been trying to ignore that fact for most of my life. From a young age, I’ve struggled with depression beginning when my parents divorced. I was paralyzed by the chaos this reality caused me. Eventually, I was able to meet Jesus and quickly became the class clown who felt like everything was good as long as people were smiling. That all came crashing down when my wife got terribly sick 3 months into our marriage… reality became too overwhelming. Disappointment, dissatisfaction, and distress became very real. Over the past 18 years of watching my wife slowly deteriorate, I have learned quite a bit and the Lord has provided in unique ways. He called me into counseling, community, and commitment. I received a master’s degree in leadership from Denver Seminary and worked in the local church for roughly a decade. Pastoral coaching has become my passion. Because of my story of suffering, I have found the ability to relate and empathize with people in their own story of suffering. At tiller, I desire to give away my time to coach others towards health (physically, mentally, emotionally, and especially spiritually). When I say that I want to give away my time… I truly mean that. I have had a lot of people encourage me to start a coaching ministry, showing me how much you can charge hourly for that kind of service. But that hasn’t sat well with me. It’s really bothered me to charge counseling kind of rates for something that the Lord has called me into. I actually want to give away this coaching. Folks have told me that this is a bad business decision. It probably is. My prayer is that I can raise enough funds to afford my time as a missionary to those who are suffering. I have a donation page in the header of this page if people do want to donate, but truly, there will be no payment expected for this coaching. I won’t have all the answers. But, I will be along side of you, praying and encouraging you towards what is the best reality of all… there is a God who loves you and is desperate for you. -jim</image:caption>

      <image:title>meet tim. - it all starts with what’s real.</image:title>
<image:caption>coming full circle. I grew up in the South, where being a “Christian” is often considered a birthright. But during my freshman year of college, I discovered there’s a vast difference between practicing religion and having a real relationship with Jesus. Since then, my walk with Him has looked a lot like the stock market—full of ups and downs—but always trending upward (heavenward). After college, I moved to Denver with the goal of earning a Master’s degree in Counseling from Denver Seminary. I believed God was calling me into counseling because of the many “expectation gaps” I had already experienced—times when life didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. Little did I know, there would be many more lessons and a great deal of coaching from God Himself over the next 40 years. Soon after arriving in Denver, I met my wife, got a job, and eventually attended Seminary. I tried launching a private counseling practice in a city already full of counselors, but that door didn’t open. So, I “got a real job,” as they say, and over the years worked for a variety of companies—large and small. We homeschooled our two sons, I started my own company, and later transitioned into healthcare leadership, managing nursing homes, assisted living communities, and even running a health plan for the nation’s largest insurance company. Along the way, my wife and I encountered many more expectation gaps—seasons of disappointment, dissatisfaction, and distress. But in 2020, when we met Jim Barnard and learned about tiller coaching, everything clicked. We finally had language for what we had been experiencing in such seasons. I realized God was bringing me back to the calling He placed on my heart decades earlier: to come alongside men, couples, and pastors, helping them navigate life’s expectation gaps while pointing them to Jesus. In 2025, God gave me the opportunity to retire from my professional career and join tiller as a coach. It feels like everything has come full circle. I’m now living out my original calling—to serve as a missionary through coaching, freely offering what God has freely given me. I still experience expectation gaps and God has shown me how to embrace them as part of my growth, no matter how difficult. I believe He wants the same for you. If my coaching has helped you and you’d like to “pay it forward,” you can do so through my donation page—but it’s never required. The only thing I ask is that we show up authentically and seek the Lord together. -tim</image:caption>
